Abstract

The authors have experienced a case of unilateral delayed sciatic nerve injury following a bilateral total hip arthroplasty for a bilateral developmental hip dislocation. It was suspected that the cause of the nerve injury was nerve degeneration due to acute nerve stretching and ischemic change. A nerve exploration, iatrogenic hip dislocation and skeletal traction were performed. After the failure of the closed progressive reduction of the joint, an open reduction, with femoral re-shortening, was performed. To reduce the risk of nerve injury, the correct degree of femoral shortening is very important, and in the case of nerve injury, immediate surgical treatment, such as nerve exploration, neurolysis, change of the modular femoral head and femoral re-shortening, is recommended.
